Strong-armed by an insurance giant - Unum's alleged tactic to evade paying out LTD claims

Most private insurance policies will inclue a clause that states that the insured must apply for Social Security Disability benefits after receiving long-term disability benefits for a specified amount of time from the insurer. Additionally, these same policies also state that if the insured is approved and begins to receive such benefits, the insurer may deduct the amount received from their private disability payment.

If you haven't read the fine print of your private insurance policy, now is the time to do so. And, if you have, at least you know what you're in for...maybe...

For the sake of time, I'm really going to simplify the claims process, but if you take the clause for what it's worth, you file a claim with your insurer, wait to be approved, receive disability benefits, and shortly thereafter, apply for Social Security Disability benefits.   

Representatives of the insurance giant Unum allegedly created their own interpretation of this clause and began requiring claimants to apply for Social Security disability benefits first before accepting, let alone approving a claim for long-term disability benefits.

Thankfully, an insider brought this abusive tactic to light. The "qui tam" lawsuit againt Unum is now being heard in a federal court in Boston, MA. Let's hope that there is enough evidence to really bring these guys down!
