According to
Disabled World, a
study compares aspirin and warfarin in treating heart failure patients. If you have been diagnosed with a severe heart condition that prevents you from working, you could qualify for
Social Security disability benefits.
In one of the largest studies done, it was found that both
aspirin and warfarin were able to help prevent strokes and deaths in patients with a normal heart rhythm but had heart failure.
Both treatments had a low risk of dangerous bleeding in the brain; however, warfarin in general had more episodes of bleeding. Those patients on warfarin who were followed for 4 or more years, did better overall than those taking aspirin. Although, it took that amount of time for the benefits to be seen.
Stroke rates were 0.72% on warfarin and 1.36% on aspirin. Yet the
rate of death in the patients followed in the study was similar between them (7.47% on warfarin and 7.93% on aspirin).
Due to the findings of this study, researchers indicate that
since it takes about 4 years after starting warfarin for any real benefits, and since there is the risk of bleeding, patients might be better off with aspirin.
