Though we are all too familiar with the outward signs of a blast from a bomb, loss of limb, shrapnel injuries and head wounds, a more discreet injury is severely affecting thousands of veterans.
A new study shows that though a blast from a bomb may leave no outward signs of damage the kinetic energy can cause shock waves to kill off and alter brain cells. The problem for the VA and veterans exposed to IED's and other explosive devices is that an MRI may not show the injury, leaving veterans without the evidence they need to get treatment and disability benefits.
The VA reports that the Iraq and Afghanistan veterans they treat have been exposed to between six and 25 bomb blasts. Researchers believe that the numbers of blasts veterans are exposed to greatly increases their chances of being affected by a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
