Studying Canine Diseases from Iraq Could Help Prevent Diseases in Veterans

The military has been deploying canines along with soldiers to the Middle East for years. Now it seems studying medical records from military dogs that died while over there between 2003 and 2007 may benefit veteran’s health, according to an article in The Navy Times.

Veterans Health Administration (VHA) researchers will be looking into not only medical records from 450 military dogs that served in the Middle East, but tissue samples as well
. They plan on creating a central database of information that will contain information on illnesses the dogs contracted. That information will then be compared to illnesses suffered by troops that were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The effort is part of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Gulf War Veterans’ Illnesses Task Force. In comparing the illnesses, they will be looking for any common elements between diseases and illnesses that could be related to “environmental exposures.”

By looking at what the military dogs contracted, it is hoped researchers will be able to predict health threats and concerns soldiers may face in the near future. There has been little change to the environment since soldiers began developing Gulf War Syndrome from the first Gulf War, and the VHA is hoping to prevent more soldiers and veterans from developing such illnesses.
