In a report from
Yahoo News,
surgery for atrial fibrillation may be most beneficial to obese patients. If a heart condition causes you to be out of work for several months, you could be entitled to
long-term disability benefits.
These new findings suggest that in comparison to those who are at a healthier weight, the
quality of life for someone who is obese can be significantly improved after undergoing ablation.
Ablation is a
procedure in which a catheter is placed into the heart, burning away tissue that is causing the heart to beat irregularly. While a study showed it benefited all patients, it had even greater benefits to those considered overweight or obese.
A year later, they continued to experience an improved quality of life, with many of their
previous limitations no longer being an issue. Some of the improvements reported included
decreased depression and anxiety, and more energy. Those with a healthier BMI didn’t experience such significant improvements.
Ablation is not a common way to treat atrial fibrillation. Most patients receive medication which helps to control the heart’s rhythm.
This study didn’t look at how lives are improved with medication.
