Take Advantage of Medicare Open Enrollment

Whether you receive Social Security disability or Supplemental Security Income, you are likely either on Medicare or will eventually get it. As long as you have been getting benefits for at least two years, you are eligible. If you are already covered, know that open enrollment for Medicare Part D is offered until December 31.

Medicare Part D is the prescription drug plan, which means that if you take medication frequently, this could help you save money. Before you sign up, you need to consider the following points:

  • Is least one of the pharmacies on the list is located near you?
  • Are the medications you take on the list of covered prescriptions?
  • How much are the co-pays for your medications?
  • Is there a gap in coverage?
  • Can you afford the monthly premium costs?

If you are already happy with your Medicare coverage plan, or perhaps simply do not take many medications, you can stick with what you have. However, Medicare plans are changing for 2010, which means it is a great time to review coverage and decide if your current plan is still the best for you. In fact, some Medicare plans in particular are not being renewed for next year, in which case you will have to select a different one.

Remember that Medicare Part D is completely optional, and there are no income restrictions if you already receive Medicare in general. One thing to be aware of, though, is that if you never got prescription drug coverage when you first signed up for Medicare, you could be charged a fine when you sign up for it later.

If you have any questions about the changes in Medicare plans, the availability of Part D, or anything else related to coverage, ask your lawyer. The coverage is there to assist people who receive disability or other help from the SSA, so take advantage of it.

If you or your loved one are suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility.
