October 5, 2010 - U.S. Representative Kathy Castor (D-Tampa) has an idea of how to bring a new Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center to downtown Tampa. Castor has contacted Nancy Resissener, who is the acting Haley VA Center Administrator, to ask her to open a VA medical center in the existing armory building, which has been designated as a historical site.
The Florida National Guard regained control of the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory in West Tampa. Heritage Square LLC purchased the property on which the armory is situated in 2007. Heritage then improved the property with a hotel and resort but left the armory building intact. Heritage has since fallen out of the picture, which leaves the armory property up for sale. The National Guard, who will take control of the property, must give ownership of the property to the City of Tampa.
Rep. Castor then contacted Mayor Pam Iorio and Councilman Charlie Miranda to ask their support in developing a VA clinic out of the armory. Castor believes the armory is a prime location in which to have a VA medical facility. Being downtown, it would provide convenient access to the many veterans in the immediate vicinity. According to Castor, easy access to deserved VA medical care is the very least that can be done for veterans.
