The James A. Haley veterans' hospital in Tampa, Florida recently unveiled its revamped and improved polytrauma unit. The hospital will house the renovated unit on its 5-West wing. The polytrauma unit only cares for those veterans who have received several severe injuries.
The improved unit is part of the hospital's overall goal, which is to create a "nurturing and healing" environment. In order for that goal to happen, the environment itself must be comfortable, which was a big part of the remodeling.
The improved polytrauma unit is more than just a more comfortable rehabilitative environment, however. The unit's main focus is providing physical medicine, and it is essential the polytrauma unit stay on the cutting edge of state-of-the-art medicine. This unit displays the progress made in treating wounded warriors.
Treating injured soldiers for multiple wounds at the same time is a new field of study. The word "polytrauma' itself did not even exist 10 years ago when American troops first became engaged in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Including the unit at the James Haley VA hospital, only 4 polytrauma units exist across the nation. The focus of these units is to treat and provide care for soldiers sustaining injuries on the modern battlefield, especially those with multiple injuries. The units, however, put a lot of emphasis on treating soldiers suffering injuries as a result of being exposed to blasts from improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The Tampa polytrauma unit boasts 14 private rooms. Every room includes its own bathroom, flat-screen television, and ceiling lift for the safe movement of patients. Everything is designed for the most comfortable recovery possible.
