Tanning Beds Can Increase Risk for 3 Common Skin Cancers

In a report from Medline Plus, tanning beds can increase the risk for 3 common skin cancers. When cancer of any nature results in an individual facing months of treatment and recovery, then long-term disability benefits could be available.

Of the estimated 10% of people in the U.S. who use tanning beds, they are at risk of the following 3 skin cancers:

  • squamous cell carcinoma;
  • basal cell carcinoma; and
  • melanoma.

New research also finds that the more often a tanning bed is used, the greater the risk. Additionally, the risk is also elevated when used during high school and college years.

For every 4 visits to a tanning bed,
in comparison to those who don't use one, the risk for squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma increased by 15%. For the deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma, the risk was increased by 11%.

In March 2010, an advisory panel from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did recommend that a ban be given on tanning beds for minors. The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees with this ban, however, no such law has been passed.

Disability benefits could be available if you have been diagnosed with a severe health condition that will lead to you being unable to work. You should speak with an Atlanta long-term disability lawyer about eligibility.

Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don't make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve.

When a severe medical condition makes it impossible for you to work and you've been denied your long-term disability benefits, an attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg, P.A. can help you cut through the red tape and fight for your benefits, no matter where you live in the U.S!
