Telemedicine Makes Doctor Visits Easier for More Disabled Veteran Patients

For many veterans, distance and time are hurdles to be overcome in order to get to see their doctor. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is attempting to eliminate those problems by implementing using telemedicine systems. This system will greatly impact many modern veterans disability issues.

According to a story in the Orlando Sentinel, telemedicine is essentially a two-way video system; it is by no means a new technology. It does, however, make life much easier for my veterans to attend appointments with doctors and mental health care providers they otherwise would not have been able to attend. Additionally, it all but eliminates sitting around waiting to be seen.

Over the next year, the VA has plans to make much more use of telemedicine technology within their health care system. The VA's telemedicine system allows patients who have chronic diseases to send their medical information directly to their doctor's office from the comfort of their own homes. Armed with their patients' information, doctors can offer specific medical advice over the phone.

Doctors will still spend the same amount of time with patients over the screen as they would in person, but the patient would only have to travel to their local VA to make that meeting with their doctor who could be hundreds of miles away. This is primarily intended to be a solution for situations in which patient care is limited by the number of available doctors or the lack of a specialist in a rural area.
