The “AnswerRing” Designed for Veterans to Recognize PTSD Symptoms

According to an article in The Republic, a new invention, known as the “AnswerRing”, may help U.S. veterans who are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) to become more aware of their symptoms.

Veterans with PTSD symptomscannot allow their condition to go untreated. Veterans should better understand when it is time to seek help from such mental conditions such as PTSD for their sake and their loved ones. Many veterans simply cannot adjust to their civilian lifestyle because PTSD symptoms are overpowering and many times veterans end up committing suicide.

The inherent problem is the difficulty in successfully diagnosing PTSD. Timothy Belton developed the AnswerRing specifically for this purpose. Essentially the AnswerRing is a cardboard wheel with 4 moveable tabs surrounding a picture of a draped American flag. On the AnswerRing are different scenarios, which include:
  • ·        unshakeable war memories;
  • ·        marital problems; and
  • ·        suicidal thoughts.
The veteran uses the ring by choosing a scenario that applies to him or her. The ring can then be flipped over to reveal reasons for such behavior and how it can be better managed. The ring is not designed to treat veterans, but to simply make them aware of a problem that may exist.
