The MOVE Act May Help U.S. Veterans Find Work

Among the multiple problems U.S veterans are facing when they return to their civilian lives, unemployment is among the top. In an attempt to eliminate that pressure, Congress is attempting to create jobs for veterans and veterans with disabilities, according to an article in The State Journal.

The Mobilizing Opportunities for Veterans Employment (MOVE) Act
(H.R. 3473) was introduced by Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.V.) and Rep. Tom Petri (R-Wis). The bill is bipartisan and if passed will create transportation jobs for veterans. According to the legislation’s sponsors, veterans will be given the opportunity and responsibility of helping to reconstruct transportation systems.

Rep. Rahall believes veterans should be given the unique opportunity to continue their service to this country once their military service has ended, which could help the country improve its “economic competitiveness.”

Under the MOVE Act, state departments receiving funds for their highway and avenues of transit, such as public transit agencies, would be affected by the pending legislation. These agencies would be required to give contract preferences to contractors who offer hiring preferences to veterans when those contracts are for any construction being subsidized by federal dollars.

Some veterans of the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan may especially find this beneficial since it allows them to continue along the same line of work as they are currently performing.
