The Timeline for Social Security Disability Process

If you are suffering from a severe disability, a Social Security disability attorney can help you determine if you are eligible for disability benefits. You may be wondering what the timeline is for the Social Security disability process, including when you should apply and how long it will take before receiving benefits.

It is important that you apply early for Social Security disability benefits
. The process of obtaining benefits can be very long and time-consuming. If your claim is denied, then you will face a longer timeframe if you intend to appeal that decision.

You do not want to stop working for a period of time and then try to apply for disability benefits. Benefits are determined by how much you have paid in, so the longer you wait to apply, then the greater likelihood that your benefits will be decreased.

Benefits are not received for a disability until 5 months after you have become disabled. Even if you stop working because of your disability, you will not be eligible to collect disability benefits until 5 months later. Meanwhile, it is important you apply for disability benefits since it can take anywhere from 3 to 5 months for your claim to be reviewed by the Social Security Administration.

If your claim is approved, you will be paid back for the months your claim was in review. This does not include the 5 month waiting period. So again, it is crucial that you apply for benefits as soon as possible.

If you are suffering from a serious illness or injury and find yourself disabled, you may need the expertise of an experienced Social Security disability attorney.

If you or your loved is suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility. The process of securing Social Security Disability and/or Supplemental Security Income benefits can be difficult and overwhelming. Don't go it alone! The attorneys at LaVan & Neidenberg, located in Atlanta, Georgia, understand the inner workings of the Social Security Administration and will help you navigate the system.
