The VA’s 2009 Report on “Utilization of VA Benefits and Services”

The VA's Office of Policy and Planning released its 2009 report on the number of veterans utilizing the department's services earlier this year and it contained a number of interesting facts.

Of the 23,440,000 estimated living veterans, only 36% received VA benefits and/or services in 2008. The vast majority (87%) of those who took advantage of the VA's services were men, aged 45 or older (81%).

A majority of veterans who get VA disability compensation do not use the VA's health care system.

The report also revealed that most veterans who do take advantage of the VA's programs use only one program such as education, pension, insurance, vocational rehabilitation, etc.
