The Veterans Farm’s Horticulture Therapy Proves Helpful

Veterans returning from deployments with such mental conditions as traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) suffer multiple symptoms; some of which can be debilitating and life-changing. Many seek out whatever relief is immediately available, and many find the wait for treatment at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) too long. For veterans in the Jacksonville area, however, there are options available.

The Veterans Farm is a national organization. Its focus is offering "prescriptions without medication" for those veterans in need, and it does so through a fellowship lasting 14 weeks. The farm was founded by Florida native Adam Burke, an Army veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart.

Burke's is an organic blueberry farm, and according to many veterans serves as a sanctuary. This seems to be especially true for those veterans attempting to assimilate back into a civilian lifestyle. The farm spans 8 acres and in addition to its status among veterans as a place of safety and refuge, it is about much more than just helping veterans.

While at the farm, veterans are introduced to horticulture therapy, which builds and relies upon team efforts. As far as rehabilitative therapies go, horticulture therapy has proven to be must more effective than "desk work." At the end of their time, veterans are given the resources necessary to either launch their own farm or capably work for a larger farm.

Burke has put the focus of his farm on helping the community, not just veterans. Although some veterans do walk away with a renewed vigor for life, or even with a new purpose in their life, those veterans will end up giving back to the community in one way or another. According to Burke, the biggest joy in his life is giving back.

The farm seems to be helping veterans address many of the symptoms brought on by their various mental conditions, from depression to insomnia. The more veterans Burke's farm helps, the more will be available to give back and strengthen the community.
