Therapies for Heart Failure May Save 70,000 Lives Every Year

In a report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), it is found that therapies, based on evidence, for heart failure could potentially save 70,000 lives every year. A new study finds the following therapies to be effective in treating heart failure, with the benefits being greater than any risks: 

• angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs);
• angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs);

• aldosterone antagonists;
• hydralazine/isosorbide dinitrate (H/ID);
• implantable cardioverter defibrillators; and
• cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).

Even though these therapies are shown to decrease the risk of death (17% for ACEI/ARB therapy and 43% for H/ID therapy), not enough doctors or hospitals are offering them to patients, according to findings based on the 2010 American Heart Association Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update.

The most underused therapies include aldosterone antagonists, H/ID, and CRT. Calculations from researchers indicate that nearly 70,000 lives could be saved with the use of them.
