Treating Kidney Disease

A drug that is used to treat gout may also help patients with kidney disease. The treatment, allopurinol, is typically used for patients with hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia is found in patients when there is excess uric acid in the blood. This can lead to gout and even in some cases, to kidney failure. There is also the possibility of hyperuricemia leading to hypertension and heart disease.

Specifically, the treatment allopurinol is shown to do the following:

  • Decrease inflammation for patients with chronic kidney disease;
  • Slow the progression of kidney disease; and
  • Reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems.

Comparing this treatment to other typical therapies, it reduced the risk of cardiovascular problems by 71% and the risk of being hospitalized by 62%.

This treatment slowed down the progression of kidney disease, despite the patient's gender or age. Although the results are promising, there is still more testing that needs to be done.
