In a report from Web MD, treating prehypertension with medication may help to reduce the risk of stroke. Stroke could lead to an individual being out of work for an extended period of time and possibly qualifying for long-term disability benefits.
Prehypertension is a condition in which your blood pressure isn’t elevated enough to be considered high but is still above normal. While high blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, prehypertension does as well.
Currently, there aren’t any recommendations to treat elevated blood pressure with medication. Most doctors first recommend making lifestyle changes such as losing weight or quitting smoking.
However, new research finds that in addition to these lifestyle changes, medication that helps lower blood pressure can better protect against strokes. A study took a look at several patients who were taking medication or were treated with a placebo. The results showed a 22% reduction of risks associated with strokes in the patients taking blood pressure-lowering drugs.
In some cases, lifestyle changes aren’t enough to reduce blood pressure. Therefore, adding medication may be necessary. Patients need to discuss appropriate medical care with their doctor.
