Treating Traumatic Brain Injuries in Veterans With Software

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been referred to as the signature injury of war. Approximately 400,000 soldiers and veterans suffer from TBIs.

Symptoms can last from weeks to a lifetime, and among others, can consist of:

  • lack of concentration;
  • memory loss;
  • anxiety attacks; and
  • depression.

Although some symptoms can be managed, no cure has been discovered. Some neuroscientists, however, believe "manipulating the brain's neuroplasticity" will serve as a prospective treatment. The technique changes the brain's neuronal structure as it reacts to stimuli and behavior.

The Department of Defense (DoD) has issued contracts to companies using "brain health software", such as Posit Science software. This software is used to increase visual-spatial abilities, attention, memory, and language abilities in people who have suffered TBI. Although controversial, if the software works, it could be used on those people suffering from other mental conditions such as autism and Parkinson's disease.

Critics doubt the long-term positive effects of the software, despite short-term improvements. Although the positive effects are theoretically possible, many do not believe people with brain damage will see any great level of improvement.

Proponents claim a person's brain structure is always changing. Therefore, specific brain exercises can rearrange the "underlying structure" of the brain of those people with brain injuries. Initial trials will include 132 soldiers with mild TBI.
