Treatment for Leukemia

If you or someone you love suffers from leukemia, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits

Living with leukemia and dealing with the treatment for this cancer can be harsh on the body and can lead to a person becoming disabled. The most common treatment for leukemia is chemotherapy. There are various ways that chemotherapy can be administered, such as:

  • Pills
  • Intravenously
  • Catheter
  • Into the cerebrospinal fluid
  • Into the spinal fluid
  • Under scalp

Other treatments for chemotherapy may include:

  • Targeted Therapy - Uses drugs to block the growth of leukemia cells
  • Biological Therapy - Substance given via IV or drug injected under skin
  • Radiation Therapy - High-energy rays kill leukemia cells
  • Stem Cell Transplant - After either chemotherapy or radiation therapy (or a combination of both), patient receives healthy stem cells via a large vein

Any type of treatment received for leukemia has side effects that should be discussed with a doctor.
