Many veterans have disabilities associated with their reproductive system due to injuries to their genitourinary organs from exposure to improvised explosive devices (IEDs). According to an article on Insurance News Net, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will now allow veterans and soldiers with traumatic genitourinary injuries to qualify for Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI).
Such injuries are not only destructive, but can easily change a person’s quality of life. For this very reason, genitourinary injuries must be included in the TSGLI list of “payable losses,” according to VA Sec. Eric Shinseki.
Not surprisingly, there has been a swell of these types of cases reported. According to military clinicians, the enlarged number of such injuries can be directly attributed to not only IEDs, but the “nature of current warfare.”
Qualifying soldiers and veterans with injuries qualified as traumatic will receive a single payment from TSGLI. That payment is retroactive and can be applied to any genitourinary injury suffered after October 6, 2001. Genitourinary injuries are being added to a list that already includes:
In addition to the one-time payment, the VA has made available health care for veterans with genitourinary issues. Furthermore, for those with service-related injuries, disability compensation is available.
