Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center Continues Renovations

April 15, 2010 - Since 2008 the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has given the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center almost $54 million for construction from federal stimulus money. The VA is focusing on patient satisfaction and in order for that focus to come to fruition, the VA Medical Centers require updated buildings with full service facilities. The VA understands they are entering a new world of long-term health care and are attempting to prepare themselves for the veterans that will pass through their doors.

The Tuscaloosa VA's current facilities are designed similar to a nursing home with more than one veteran in a room. This month the Tuscaloosa VA will break ground for new construction in preparation for the treatment of two very specific groups with two very specific set of distinctive needs:

  • Senior citizen veterans aged 65 and over; and
  • Young veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The ultimate goal of the construction benefitting the senior citizens is to create a place where they feel at home. Plans call for the construction of 12, 10,000-square-foot cottages, which will allow seniors their own room and living spaces.

The younger veterans focus is more on programs handling post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). The Tuscaloosa VA is staying within the VA's focus of providing only the best and most modern medicine and both of these injuries require just that.

Not everything is about construction at the Tuscaloosa VA. The medical center was built decades ago so there is much renovation needed. Windows, roofs, and aesthetic renovations are constantly being restored and brought back up to standard.

Veterans are not the only ones benefiting from the stimulus money. One group of people really benefitting from this construction are the local contractors. At any given time there are 5-6 contractors working on varying projects at the VA and the amount of construction at the VA is keeping many contractors from traveling out of town for work. The Tuscaloosa VA grew from 700 to 1,100 employees and the amount of VA engineers has grown from 3 to 7 since 2007.
