Two Pilot Programs Help Veterans Collect Disability Payments Faster

November 24, 2010 - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is doing what they can to make sure those veterans with valid disability claims are paid as quickly as possible. VA Secretary Eris Shinseki announced 2 new pilot programs that will serve this very function. "Quick Pay" and "Express Lane" both implement new procedures speeding up the payment of VA disability benefits to those veterans suffering from military-related disabilities.

The VA regional office in St. Petersburg, Florida will host the Quick Pay Disability Program. This program benefits those veterans that submit their claims along with enough evidence to support the validity of their claim so that it can be decided at least in part, if not in full. Approximately 1,600 Florida veterans have been paid over $2 million since Quick Pay's implementation. Better still, these payments were made almost 3 months faster than the VA's goal, which is 125 days.

The "Express Lane" pilot program will be based at the Seattle, WA VA, but will also be run in: Nashville, TN; St. Paul, Minn.; and Muskogee, Okla. This program re-assigns employees to work on disability claims based on the complexity of the claim. Multiple employees are assigned to work on several non-complex claims, such as those that only involve one disability. This process allows the more complex disability claims to get the attention they need from other staff members.

Veterans deserve timely payments for their VA disability claims. This is one of the basic goals of the VA's transformation into a more efficient agency. The VA will continue to put out new programs to ensure their backlog is gone by 2015, and ensure veterans have their claims resolved within 125 days.
