Type 2 Diabetes Combined with Depression May Produce Dementia

In a report from Health Day, a new study indicates that type 2 diabetes combined with depression may increase the risk of dementia. Dementia could become disabling and result in the need for Social Security disability benefits.

Researchers found that those with type 2 diabetes had twice the risk of developing dementia 3 to 5 years after receiving the diagnosis of depression, in comparison to those who didn’t suffer from depression.

It has been known for some time that diabetes does increase the chance of dementia and approximately 20% of those with diabetes also experience depression. While the risk for dementia was already doubled in those with diabetes, adding depression seems to amplify it by 50%.

Certain risk factors increase the risk of depression for diabetics including smoking, inactive lifestyle, and an unhealthy diet;
however, these are lifestyle issues that can be changed.

If you or a loved one is suffering from dementia or any other condition that has resulted in severe impairment, you may be able to receive Social Security disability benefits.
