There are thousands of
homeless veterans across the U.S. and many more are facing eviction due to lack of employment and disabilities.
U.S. veteran Mark Galloway found success by reaching help through the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program and finding employment to get him back on his feet.
Galloway was living on the streets of Los Angeles, unemployed, homeless, and suffering from alcoholism. His wakeup call came when his girlfriend became pregnant with their first child, and he knew he had to turn his life around.
With help from the
VA health care system in San Diego,
Galloway was introduced to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and established a case with their Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program (VASH) to obtain affordable housing for his new family.
After months of working with VASH and proving that he was truly seeking to better his life,
he was awarded a housing solution that gave his family a solid place to call home. Once he had a roof over his head, Galloway continued his desire to turn his life around by seeking employment.
During his 2 years of seeking full-time employment, Galloway was encouraged and guided by his case worker and his wife.
He eventually took on a 6-month volunteer gig at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla, CA and is now a full-time nurse’s aid at the center.
