According to a press release on
Market Watch, an estimated
4 million veterans suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a chronic condition that can lead to disability. Many
disabled veterans have developed this condition and until now, treatment options were limited through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical system.
A new therapy, known as the
Provent Sleep Apnea Therapy, is now available to veterans who are struggling through OSA. They can find the therapy through the VA thanks to a multi-year Federal Supply Contract granted by Provent manufacturer, Ventus Medical.
The therapy
consists of small non-invasive nasal plugs that are easily applied and removed. This replaces the traditional continuous positive airway pressure machine that was often considered too bulky and loud.
Doctors believe the increase in
veterans with OSA is due to the high amount of exposure to dust and sand, especially for those deployed in the Middle East. This condition is typically diagnosed with a sleep test. If it is left untreated,
OSA can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes.
By increasing the options of treatment for OSA in U.S. veterans, this measure can potentially prevent many other serious conditions that would
qualify as veterans’ disability.
