It has unfortunately become commonplace to hear about veterans returning to the U.S. following a deployment and not quite fitting back into life as a civilian. Emotions range from feeling displaced to feeling alienated by an unwelcoming society. Alejandro Mujica, a veteran and graduate at the University of Central Florida (UCF), understands this and established a program he believes will help other veterans.
Many veterans look for distraction to a point to help them deal with their transition back to their civilian lives. In response to those feelings, the Veterans Academic Resource Center (VARC) at UCF approved Mujica's request to launch a writing group specifically for veterans.
One in every 8 veterans returning from deployment suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), according to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This writing group seeks to help those veterans at UCF with PTSD manage their symptoms while teaching creative writing skills.
While not suffering from PTSD, Mujica understands how therapeutic writing can be, and hopes to help out other suffering veterans with the new program.
The VARC's mission is to give as much help possible to veterans with problems. Returning to a misinformed and stigmatizing society, many veterans need whatever help they can get.
The program will offer creative writing and journaling as an outlet for their emotions. The proof of such exercises being helpful in such situations already exists. Now it is just a matter of making sure those veterans in need of help are directed toward the program. This program is just another step of building a tight community of veterans, which serves to help other veterans.
