Understanding Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis is included on the listing of impairments that the Social Security Administration uses to determine eligibility for disability benefits. Our article featuring an overview of the respiratory system can also help claimants understand which conditions may lead to eligibility of Social Security disability benefits.

Today there are approximately 30,000 people in the United States who have developed cystic fibrosis. This chronic disease, which affects the digestive system and the lungs, is an inherited condition. It is a serious disease that can lead to death, but with advancements in technology, many people are living longer.

The defective gene that causes cystic fibrosis can lead to:

  • Clogged lungs;
  • Lung infections;
  • Obstructed pancreas; and
  • Prevent natural enzymes from breaking down and absorbing food.

Some of the symptoms of cystic fibrosis include:

  • Ongoing cough, sometimes accompanied by phlegm;
  • Lung infections;
  • Difficulty breathing;
  • Difficulty with bowel movements; and
  • Weight and/or growth that is slowed down.

If you or someone you love suffers from cystic fibrosis, you may be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits. The severity of this condition can leave a person unable to work. Contact a disability attorney who can help you determine eligibility and answer any questions you may have.
