Understanding Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease is a blood disorder that can lead to disability. Social Security disability benefits may be available to you and your family if you suffer from this disease. To learn more about hematological disorders and how the Social Security Administration determines disability for these diseases, visit our article library.

Sickle cell disease is an inherited disorder, coming from parents' hemoglobin genes. Red blood cells contain an abnormal type of hemoglobin and can become crescent shaped which makes passing through small blood vessels difficult.

Complications can arise from this disease when small blood vessels are blocked. This results in tissues becoming damaged. Unfortunately, there is not a cure for sickle cell disease.

There are many types of sickle cell disease but the most common are:

  • Sickle cell anemia;
  • Sickle beta-plus thalassemia;
  • Sickle beta-zero thalassemia; and
  • Sickle-hemoglobin C disease.

Some of the health conditions that a patient with sickle cell can suffer from include:

  • Anemia;
  • Jaundice;
  • Gallstone(s) formations;
  • Lung tissue damage;
  • Pain in stomach, chest, arms or legs;
  • Stroke; and
  • Damage to organs.

If you suffer from sickle cell disease or another hematological disorder, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. An experienced Social Security disability attorney can help answer any questions you may have. Contact a disability attorney who can help you determine eligibility.
