U.S. Health Outlook; Higher Costs, Shorter Life Expectancy

The National Research Council indicates that while, in general, life expectancy rates in the United States have improved, the rates are still low in comparison to other countries such as Australia and Japan. There is a particular discrepancy between the amount of money spent on healthcare and the slow increase in life expectancy rates, a finding that has surprised researchers.

Currently the life expectancy for women at age 50 in the United States is 33.1 years, in comparison to the average of 35.5 in other countries like Japan, Australia, Switzerland and Sweden.

The report also noted that cardiovascular diseases and cancer continue to be the No. 1 killer in the U.S. On the positive side, survival rates for these diseases are relatively stable.
