While U.S. leaders declared the ending of the Iraq War on Thursday, December 15, our country is now preparing for the arrival of thousands of soldiers and veterans with disabilities over the next couple of weeks, according to an article on CBS News.
During the announcement, the U.S. Forces-Iraq flag was officially retired and is being brought home. U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta stated in his speech that he believes the price we paid “in blood and money” was worth it because we were able to place Iraq on a path headed towards democracy.
The price this country has paid “in blood and money” has been significant in numbers:
At the height of the Iraq War there were 505 operational bases, and now only 2 remain. Although there will be about 4,000 soldiers that will remain in Iraq over the next month, our country will be celebrating the return of our sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters. It has been a long, hard fight on the military, individual families, as well as on the country as whole.
