U.S Veterans Face Consequences Due to Supercommittee’s Failure to Cut Budget

According to an article on PR Newswire.com, defense spending will automatically be reduced by $492 billion in January 2013, since the supercommitte was unable to eliminate $1.2 trillion from the federal budget over 10 years. This will likely have dire consequences for several U.S. veterans.

The military will likely be facing a devastating impact, as early predictions show current ground forces being reduced to levels that haven’t been seen since prior to World War II. The Navy’s forces would be reduced to pre- World War I levels, and the Air Force will reduce its size to levels never before seen.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) budget may remain untouched in some areas, but veterans programs will most likely take a severe hit.
The VA does not administer every veterans program, and this is particularly true when speaking of programs to help homelessness and unemployment among veterans; therefore, President Obama and VA. Sec. Eric Shinseki could see their respective work to end veteran unemployment and veteran homelessness come to a screeching halt due to direct and indirect cuts.

Although there are other avenues that could be explored, unless something drastic occurs within the next year, veterans benefit programs can expect to remain on the chopping block.

If you are a disabled veteran who has been denied disability compensation or have not yet applied for benefits from the VA, a South Florida disability attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg is ready to help.
