According to an article on GovWin.com, the VA should not be responsible for every step of U.S. veteran’s reintegration. Ultimately, a veteran’s success in his or her post-military life needs attention and help from the private sector.
According to Col. David Sutherland, the Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff – Warrior and Family Support, the “VA is hurting as much as it’s helping.” Specifically, Col. Sutherland believes the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) must be completely eliminated.
In order to properly reintegrate, veterans need to be connected with “groups who build networks,” which exist in the private sector, not in the government. Col. Sutherland believes it is people and networks that will make veterans successful because of the abundance of resources. Those resources cannot be provided solely by reintegration websites and job portals, which is a big part of the VA’s approach.
The government and the private sector must work together to help veterans reincorporate themselves into their new lives. Just as the military had to train soldiers to be soldiers, the private sector has the same ability to train veterans to once again be civilians.
