U.S. Veterans Still in Pursuit of Benefits Despite VA Efforts

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has undergone many changes in the last year, especially with their programs and services focused on homeless veterans and veterans with disabilities. According to an article in Boston.com, the VA s is still struggling with disability compensation claims.

It took almost 400 days for the average disability claim to be processed through the VA and Department of Defense systems.
At the same time, there are growing numbers of veterans needing help with mental health conditions and unemployment. Veteran unemployment rates have grown to levels described as “unacceptably high,” and, in order to combat that particular problem, the VA is bringing in experts to consult.

Passing legislation is just one of the avenues with which the VA has attempted to address issues
facing the veteran population, such as with the Hire a Hero Act and the Hiring Heroes Act. Both ultimately seek to create employment for U.S. veterans, although through different mechanisms.

There were also many bills passed to help veterans on other levels. Multiple bills focusing on homelessness were presented and passed, as were bills expanding the number of mental health services provided to veterans in need. Despite those efforts, U.S. veterans still face serious problems with being provided the benefits to which they’re entitled.

Veterans shouldn’t be pushed back if they don’t have all the necessities to pursue benefits. There should be more of an initiative to help. Meanwhile, veterans should also seek out help in order to move through the process quicker.
