U.S. Veterans Suffering PTSD can be Treated with Transcendental Meditation

According to an article on Treatment Centers, a recent study has concluded transcendental meditation (TM) may be one of the most valuable alternative treatments available for U.S. veterans who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The study focused on a very small group of veterans who had seen combat in Afghanistan and/or Iraq
. Those veterans aged between 25-40, and their time in combat ranged from 10 months to 2 years. Although a very small group, the results were impressive.

The veterans were all taught TM techniques, and performed those techniques over a period of 8 weeks. At the end of the period, veterans’ levels of stress and depression were tested. It was discovered those levels had dropped by up to 50%.

Transcendental meditation operates to slow down and control responses that are most troubling for soldiers with PTSD.
Soldiers use TM to slow down their nervous system, which in turn alleviates their basic flight or fight response, and therefore, lessens stress.

The best part about learning TM is the simplicity of the techniques. The veterans using TM have generally accepted it, and those who continued to practice it past the 8-week study time frame have reported a better quality of life.
