U.S Veterans Tombstones Decorated with Holiday Wreaths at Arlington Cemetery

For the last 20 years, volunteers, from the Wreaths Across America, have been honoring U.S. veterans buried at Arlington National Cemetery by laying holiday wreaths at their tombstones. According to a CBS News article, there were 90,000 wreaths laid down this year, which far surpassed the 25,000 wreaths laid down last year.

It is an impressive undertaking and required the help of approximately 15,000 volunteers working multiple hours to lay down all the wreaths. An unfortunate shortage of donations prevented the group from achieving their 100,000 wreath goal for the year. They are still determined, however, to make their future goal of 220,000 wreaths so as to honor every veteran laid to rest within Arlington.

When this tradition first began, it garnered little attention. At the time, it was just a handful of volunteers who laid down 5,000 wreaths to honor, thank, and acknowledge this nation’s veterans for their service.

On Sunday, December 4, it required 20 trucks to carry all the donated wreaths to Arlington, which was only one of the wreath-laying ceremonies occurring at veterans’ cemeteries all over the country. The wreaths will remain on view at the tombstones until January 28, 2012, which is when volunteers will return and remove them.
