According to an article in Eureka Alert, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is joining forces with researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center to develop a more advanced treatment method for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) for U.S veterans.
Researchers will perform neurological testing on veterans without PTSD as well as those with different levels of harm from PTSD. They will then measure their results with a magnetoencephalography (MEG) brain imaging tool.
Veterans will be asked to engage in a series of tasks designed to help the brain become involved in executing certain functions, specifically those that tell us what to do and how to do it when faced with a particular stimulus or task. Those results will then be tested against veterans without PTSD and/or TBI diagnoses that have been given the same tasks to complete while being monitored with the MEG.
By comparing the MEG results between the 2 groups, researchers are able to see the difference between brain activity and distinguish biomarkers. If researchers are able to determine if biomarkers can be defined, it could help speed up the process of diagnosis and treatment for PTSD and TBI.
