Using Social Media To Improve The VA

November 19, 2010 - Without the ability to adapt and grow with surrounding environments, the only result will be failure. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), as well as many other veteran organizations have found that social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter allow them to contact thousands of younger veterans to which they would not have otherwise had access. The platforms are so popular and powerful, many older generations of veterans are beginning to use them as well.

Veterans' organizations are not the only ones using the platforms. Veterans have also started using such mediums to express their concerns and disappointments with these organizations. With both veterans and the VA using these social mediums, the chance of an open dialogue is that much greater. The more open dialogue that exists, the more likely problems will be recognized and resolved.

Allowing organizations like the VA to directly engage with veterans through social media can also help them fight negative perceptions or misunderstandings about their services and how they are run. The best way to fight the impressions and rumors surrounding the VA is to use social media to start communicating with veterans and taking charge of their online image. Other large companies that also have issues with customer service such as Comcast and Starbucks have used social media and had great success in this area. One thing most people appreciate is accountability, so if that can be created, it will build trust.

The VA only started their Facebook presence in the last year, and they now have a larger following than any other federal government agency at cabinet level with almost 70,000 fans. In these times, developing an online presence through social media is a necessity in order to offer the most comprehensive services to veterans.

These social media platforms are not just trends, they are very potent tools to help veteran organizations reach and help more veterans, especially younger ones, than ever before.
