December 10, 2010 - Executive Order 13423 mandates every federal agency must obtain a certain percentage of their energy use from a renewable energy source, including the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Of the renewable energy sources the federal agencies choose to utilize, at least half of them must be new sources. In order to be in full compliance with the Energy policy, 5% of the VA's total energy needs must come from renewable sources by 2012.
The VA has been utilizing solar energy lately and has been installing solar panels on VA facilities at a fairly aggressive rate. The Sepulveda VA is the most recent VA facility to "go green" in an effort to help the VA meet their 2012 goal. The Sepulveda VA will receive a $21 million energy system operated by solar energy.
This development is 1 of 18 solar projects the VA is currently installing on their medical centers. The VA will spend federal stimulus money to the tune of $200 million in order to alter their nationwide medical centers so they use renewable energy in an efficient manner. The VA is investing an additional $200 million to be used toward conservation and clean generation of energy.
Multiple VA facilities in the California Valley are receiving multi-million dollar solar-energy systems. The solar-energy systems in the Valley will save the VA anywhere from $1 million to $1.5 million every year in electricity costs. These projects will bring the VA steps closer to meeting their 2012 deadline and more importantly, help our planet by using renewable resources instead of relying on fossil fuels.
