VA Adds New Diseases Eligible for Veterans’ Disability Benefits

The Department of Veterans Affairs recently released a list of nine new presumptive diseases.  In order to qualify for veterans' disability for one of the newly listed diseases a service woman or man must prove that they did not have the disease before they served in Afghanistan or Southwest Asia.  The new diseases include:

  • Brucellosis
  • Campylobacter jejuni
  • Q fever
  • Malaria
  • Mycobacterium tuberculosis
  • Nontyphoid Salmonella
  • Shigella
  • Visceral Ieishmaniasis
  • West Nile Virus

The new regulation will not be put into effect until 60 days after its announcement.  This waiting period allows comments to be made about the recommended additions.

If you suffer from any of the above illnesses please check back for updates.  We will inform you when the final regulation is passed.
