VA Claims Number Of Soldiers With PTSD Not Correctly Calculated

The longer military personnel are deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, the more soldiers are going to develop traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Soldiers are being diagnosed with these two conditions in record numbers.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), however, claims the number of soldiers diagnosed with PTSD is much higher than the number of soldiers the military claims has been diagnosed with PTSD. The military claims just under 80,000 soldiers suffer from PTSD. The VA claims that number is more like 800,000.

Assuming the VA's numbers are correct, the Joint Chiefs of Staff are making recommendations for new programs to help deal with the situation. These new programs are designed to provide help to the diagnosed soldiers as well as their family members.

It is highly unlikely that the number of soldiers returning to the U.S. following a deployment to the Middle East who are eventually diagnosed with PTSD is going to fall. Offered programs through the military and the VA must learn from previous soldiers diagnosed with PTSD in what treatments do and do not work.

According to the military's most recent study of the mental health among combat troops deployed to Afghanistan, approximately 20% suffer from either depression, anxiety, acute stress, or a combination of any or all of them. No matter whose numbers are more accurate, the focus must be on treating this young generation of veterans correctly.
