VA Collects Blood Samples from Veterans for Gene Study

According to an article in The Tuscaloosa New, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) plans to spend the next 4 years collecting blood samples from veterans to be used as research for a gene study. The research for the study intends to show how, and in what way, a person's genes contribute to their overall health as well as that person's risk for disease. There is much promise in this research for veterans with disabilities.

The VA's goal is to obtain a million samples, which can then be stored, studied, and coupled with an electronic health record (EHR) within the VA health care system. The diseases that researchers plan to look at include cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, such as those that may be found on the VA's presumptive illness list.

Additionally, the research can look at how a person's genes affect their reactions to medications. This window may very well give researchers the ability to look at specific types of medications and predict how a person would react to a certain medication, both positively and negatively.

Every blood sample, measuring about 2 teaspoons, may be helpful for research purposes for the next 20 years.
Depending on the size of the VA clinic, 20 samples a day could provide around 20,000 samples in 4 years.
