Almost $60 million in grants were issued to help fund programs focused on preventing homelessness among veterans, according to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Sec. Eric Shinkei as he announced the new Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) program.
The initial funding grant will be used to help veterans and their families in 40 states, to include the District of Columbia. The money will be given to 85 non-profit community agencies to help launch the prevention initiative.
This initiative will attempt to prevent veterans and their families from becoming homeless in the first place. Being able to identify and target the reason why the veterans and their families are in such dire positions will help the VA act to prevent the homelessness from occurring.
Sec. Eric Shinseki has stated the SSVF program would not be possible without the help of so many community organizers focused on making a difference in veterans' lives. The program will attempt to grant more stable environments to families at risk of becoming homeless. They hope to accomplish this not only through helping with actual housing, but with outreach programs, and case management assistance.
