As part of their continued dedication to sustaining the "rehabilitation and recovery" of disabled veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) operates a Paralympic Program. This program focuses on using adaptive sports as part of a
veterans' disability recovery program. In order to keep current information available to those who need it,
the VA launched a website for their Paralympic Program.
VA Sec. Eric Shinseki spoke to the benefits
adaptive sports have on disabled veterans both during and after their recovery period. Aside from simply taking part in adaptive sports, adding a competitive nature to the sports "supports the holistic wellness of veterans," which is one of the most vital elements of the VA's established policy of "veteran-centric care."
The benefits of disabled veterans participating in adaptive sports include: ·
stress reduction; ·
increased independence; and
·
diminished reliance on medication for pain and depression. The new Paralympic Program website will include several pages dedicated to various aspects of adaptive sports. The "success story" page will include stories from veterans who have "testified" about the positive effect adaptive sports have had on their lives. The "Sports Club Finder" will grant access to a database able to be easily searched so disabled veterans can connect with local sports programs.
Additionally, and more importantly, the new website provides an inclusive outline of all the benefits available for veterans choosing to participate in adaptive sports. This will include information on training allowances, caregiver resources, and the VA Paralympic Grant Program.
