VA Grants $7.5 Million to Adaptive Sports Program

Recently the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) was granted $7.5 million from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). That money will be used to help disabled veterans and soldiers by providing recreational activities, according to an article in Market Watch.

The VA also granted the USOC $7.5 million last year to start the program. VA Sec. Eric Shinseki committed this money to demonstrate the VA's dedication toward using "adaptive sporting opportunities" as part of its vital veterans' rehabilitation programs.

This money will be filtered down to USOC member organizations, which include various veteran organizations and Paralympic Sports Clubs. Those members will then use their allocated funds to launch "community-based, physical activity programs" for veterans with disabilities.

Adaptive sports programs help veterans on multiple levels, both physical and mental.
The VA's Office of National Veterans Sports Programs and Special Events works with the USOC to develop, implement, and manage adaptive sporting events.

At the same time, the Special Events Office is also able to collect information on adaptive sports and report that information to VA clinicians. Clinicians then can use that information to promote adaptive sports to veterans undergoing rehabilitation and recovery.
