If you are a disabled veteran and meet certain eligibility requirements, you may be awarded a grant by the VA to construct an adapted home or make modifications to your existing home. Adaptations to your home can make your daily life easier and be helpful to both you and your caregivers.
The VA's stated goal for the Specially Adapted Housing Program is to "provide a barrier-free living environment that affords the veterans or servicemembers a level of independent living he or she may not normally enjoy."
Disabled veterans may be eligible for a grant under two programs - the Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) program and the Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) program. The programs differ in the disabilities that qualify a veteran to receive assistance, as well as the amount of assistance offered.
Under the SAH program, you may be eligible to receive up to $60,000 (to be adjusted October 1, 2009). Under the SHA program, you may be eligible to receive up to $12,000 (to be adjusted October 1, 2009).
Read more about each program to determine if you might be eligible for this benefit.
