VA Honors Veterans Caregivers through National Caregiver Month

In order to celebrate the roles caregivers play to help veterans with disabilities, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is coupling with The National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA) all month to show caregivers how vital they are to so many people and veterans, according to an article in Market Watch.

Many
family caregivers take care of veterans with severe injuries who cannot care for themselves. There is no one set model or role for caregivers, and they come in all shapes and sizes. They are mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, husbands and wives, and loved ones. Every single one of them makes remarkable personal sacrifices to help those who helped this country.

The staffs of the VA will hold events across the U.S., which will honor the services caregivers provide for their beloved veteran(s). Due to the nature of the work, caregivers often suffer many personal issues, such as:

  • ·        decreased health;
  • ·        stress;
  • ·        burnout; and
  • ·        feelings of being overwhelmed.

The VA sponsored activities will include information directed toward caregivers showing them where they can seek out VA and community resources to help them. In addition, caregivers for veterans can learn how they can live healthier lives, which can help them in turn, provide healthier and more independent lives for their veterans.
