June is wellness month and in honor of that, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is hosting a 2K walk and roll. The event will take place at more than 130 VA facilities across the nation. At the same time, the event will hopefully bring in community and employee support for local homeless veterans.
VA Sec. Eric Shinseki has praised worksite wellness activities for increasing VA employees' level of engagement and productivity at their workplace.
Events such as these 2Ks: ·
involve the entire VA community; ·
emphasize how important physical activity is a part of a healthy lifestyle; and
·
help homeless veterans. The employee wellness program for the VA is called Wellness is Now (WIN). The first goal of the WIN program is to educate employees with the information, skills, and resources necessary to develop an overall healthy culture. Second, the WIN program persuades VA employees to use their knowledge of wellness to help veterans live the healthiest lifestyles possible.
WIN delivers information through traditional safety and health programs but mixes in health promoting activities. Through WIN, employees are able to discover ways to highlight healthy lifestyle choices, which in the end will not only help their personal health, but will reduce time spent away from work because of illness.
