VA Increases Publically Reported Information

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) not only strives to provide the highest quality benefits and services to our veterans, it also provides the public with up-to-date information as to the current status of VA regional offices through their performance and productivity website. The VA recently increased the amount of information they will provide to the public.

The VA's ASPIRE for Quality Initiative is the reason this information is available. Under that program, the VA made information and outcome data visible for public inspection. The area in which this information existed focused on patient safety, ICU care, and annual measures. This way, each medical center could be independently evaluated for its own progress.

The regional offices are the offices responsible for administrating benefits. It only makes sense, then, the public, veterans, and their families should be aware of just what is happening within those offices. By supplying the public with information about performance and productivity data, the VA is reinforcing their "commitment to public transparency," according to VA Sec. Eric Shinseki.

Being shared is information regarding:

  • benefit delivery;
  • benefit compensation;
  • pension;
  • employment;
  • insurance;
  • home loans;
  • education; and
  • vocational rehabilitation.

The VA is holding itself accountable for the timely processing and delivering of quality benefits by making such information available to the public. The increased information the VA will be providing the public will show how their regional office is performing compared to the VA's overall goals.
