VA Integrates New Program to Improve Surgical Systems for Veterans

As part of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) continued effort to provide the absolute best healthcare possible through the Enhance the Veteran Experience and Access to Healthcare, the VA plans to improve and upgrade its surgical systems, according to an article in Central Florida Medicine. The new system plans to improve care across the spectrum, from veterans with disabilities to standard surgical patients, and can help clinicians and administrators as well as patients.

The VA plans on incorporating a manageable "off-the-shelf surgical workflow" into their existing system, which can be beneficial in many ways such as:

  • improving the amount of patient information capable of being processed or communicated;
  • reducing waiting times for surgeries and cancellations; and
  • improves the overall experience of undergoing surgery for veteran-patients and their families.

Integrating the Surgical Quality and Workflow Manager program is a "clinical information system" that operates on a global scale. The program automates many of the current tasks such as:

  • gaining access to patient records as well as their profile;
  • ordering tests;
  • scheduling surgeries and appointments; and
  • being able to track surgical property.

Additionally, the system can improve the amount and type of information made available to family members during the surgery. This improvement is being conducted in 21 of the VA's integrated service networks and every VA hospital currently performing surgeries.
